'Tiger', numbered 58, was the sister engine to the renowned 'Lion', one of the many locomotives named after animals, a common practice for the fledgling L&MR. Designed as a luggage engine, 'Tiger' was delivered from Todd, Kitson and Laird alongside 'Lion', having been constructed at the same time as part of the same order, making them the first two locomotives built at the Railway Foundry in Leeds.
Information about 'Tiger' is limited, but it is reasonable to assume that the engine would have served the same duties as its more prominent sister, and likely underwent a rebuild at Edge Hill in 1841. When the L&MR was absorbed into the Grand Junction Railway and then the London and North Western Railway, 'Tiger' would have been renumbered under its new operators.
Unfortunately, 'Tiger' did not survive into preservation, and it is assumed that the engine was withdrawn and scrapped at the same time as 'Lion', which was converted into a stationary pump. In this pack, 'Tiger' is paired with coal wagons, a common sight in the early days of the L&MR, as coal was essential for the operation of locomotives.
The coal wagons were constructed to address the shortcomings of the then-current system of coal haulage, where separate coal containers would be loaded onto flat wagons and unloaded at the destination, a system that led to significant wear on both the wagon and container, and was phased out by 1833.
'Tiger' is a newly tooled locomotive, designed in 2022, featuring a Next18 decoder socket for DCC operation with a pre-fitted speaker, allowing this model to be enhanced on a digital layout. The locomotive itself boasts separately fitted brass details, a variety of diecast and etched parts, and a stunning electroplated boiler.
This 1:76 scale 00 gauge pack includes 4 products, with 'Tiger' being the sister to the iconic 'Lion' locomotive.
