The Midland Railway's 2441 Class tank engine design inspired the LMS's 3F 'Jinty' tank engine. Henry Fowler recognized the potential in this dependable class, which would remain in service until 1966. The Jinty was a simple design with inside cylinders and a Belpaire firebox, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 60 mph. These locomotives were fitted with steam heating for working short passenger trains, a far cry from their initial role as shunting engines.

The 3F would become the main shunting and tank engine of the LMS, serving across the UK when the class came under BR ownership in 1948. The Jintys proved useful even as larger freight engines were introduced, with some examples lasting until 1967. Nine examples of the class have been preserved, including the last one withdrawn.

One iconic user of the 3F class was the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway (SDJR), which took delivery of seven examples in 1928. These locomotives would only stay on the SDJR for a couple of years before being absorbed into the LMSR in 1930 and redistributed.

Locomotive number 20, delivered to the SDJR in 1928, would be renumbered 7151 and then 7311 upon entering the LMS pool of Jintys. It would serve in the War Department before returning to BR service as 47311, spending much of its BR life stationed in London before being withdrawn from the Stratford shed in 1960 and subsequently scrapped.

The Hornby Jinty model is a reliable runner on any layout, featuring a 3-pole motor and simple gearing. Its 6-pin DCC socket allows it to be used on a digital layout, making it an ideal starter model. As the UK's leading model railway designer, Hornby has been thrilling enthusiasts for over 100 years, offering a range of unique trains, track accessories, and scenery kits for both beginners and experienced modelers.

The Hornby Jinty locomotive is a 1:76 scale OO gauge model with a minimum curve radius of 2, fixed metal buffers, fixed tension lock coupling type, 3-pole motor, and 0-6-0 wheel configuration. It comes in a blue livery color.
