HORNBY R40439 L&MR, 3rd Class Coach - Era 1 Rolling Stock

The railway companies, driven by market forces, soon introduced a 'third class' with lower fares for the working classes, especially in the densely populated industrial areas. Companies such as the Manchester, Bolton & Bury Railway, the Manchester and Leeds Railway, and the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne & Manchester Railway all utilized open third class carriages, primarily for standing passengers, but occasionally with rudimentary benches.

The L&MR, facing pressure from competitors, considered creating a third class as early as 1839, but the directors were hesitant, fearing that the lower fares would draw passengers away from the first and second class trains. However, in April 1844, the Board ordered new enclosed second class coaches to replace the older 'blue boxes,' which were then downgraded to third class, marking the introduction of third class travel on the L&MR.

The first of the L&MR's third class train services commenced in October 1844, with departures from Manchester at 06:30 and from Liverpool at 18:30.
