HORNBY R60141 'SAA' Steel Carrier Wagon for Model Railway Sets

The SAA Steel Carrier, a two-axle flat wagon with a specific purpose, had a relatively short-lived lifespan as indicated by the SAA designation. Introduced in 1966, the first withdrawals occurred in 1971 following an accident at the foot of Beattock summit in Scotland. By 1976, more than half of the wagons had been rebuilt and redesignated as the FPA container flat wagons, as the SAAs were underused in the preceding ten years, necessitating the rebuilds. No SAA container wagons remain in service in 2023, with only a handful of the rebuilt variants still in storage.
