The open wagon has long been one of the most widely used types of wagons in the UK. Irrespective of their size, these wagons were a common sight, from individual units moved by small tank engines to long rakes hauled by some of the largest tender engines of the era. Largely unspecified, these wagons were capable of carrying any cargo that did not require protection from the elements.
As time passed and rolling stock evolved, the versatile open wagon saw its usage become more limited. Wagons designed specifically for their cargo began to supersede the standard open wagon during the 1940s and 1950s. Many open wagons found their way into private ownership, with each company then commissioning one of the Big Four companies to transport their wagons to their destinations.
This 6-plank wagon is representative of the kind that would have formed a colourful patchwork behind one of the Big Four's freight engines. Equipped with NEM couplings and metal wheels, this open wagon can roll freely, enabling it to be part of long rakes even behind smaller locomotives that may be tasked with hauling them. The wagon also features internal plank detailing, allowing for the addition of a load if desired.
