The open wagon has long been one of the most widely used types of wagons in the UK. Irrespective of their size, these wagons were a common sight, from individual units moved by small tank engines to long rakes hauled by some of the largest tender engines of the era. Largely unspecified, these wagons were capable of carrying any cargo that did not require protection from the elements.

As time passed and rolling stock evolved, the versatile open wagon saw its usage become more limited.
