Initially a land holding company, the foundation was firmly laid as it leased land to the developing railways throughout the South, with the first one operating by 1853. Eventually, like many railroads in the late 1800s, it succumbed to financial pressures and was eventually handed over, becoming the base of the Southern Pacific while they continued a nationwide expansion from California North to Oregon, East to Louisiana, and South into Mexico.

During this railroad boom, Southern Pacific was innovating refrigerated box cars, allowing California's infamous oranges and other fresh produce to be successfully transported to the Eastern United States. These Hydra-Cushion box cars, created in the 1950s, were designed to address one of the leading costs – the receipt of damaged goods in transport. To solve this issue, shock-absorbing couplers with hydraulic cushioning were fitted to thousands of boxcars, greatly reducing damage not only to the goods but also extending the life of these innovative box cars.

These boxcars ran regularly from 1955 to 1975, being pulled by first and second-generation diesel locomotives or late steam. These highly detailed and authentically liveried box cars are made using high-quality construction materials and come equipped with knuckle couplers and metal road wheels, featuring sliding doors.

Rivarossi, the Italian manufacturer now part of the Hornby Hobbies family of brands, has produced some of the most iconic locomotives in steam, diesel, and electric over the last 50 years. Boxcars carry a wide range of crated or palletized freight all around the country, protected from the elements for all types of products and goods as they make the long haul to their destination.

Switching from the originally short-lived, wooden boxcars that degraded and became a fire hazard over time, these 50-foot boxcars are fashioned after the second/third generation of boxcars made from steel frames modeled after those produced by ACF, the American Car and Foundry Company.
