The VDA van, a type of air-braked closed van built by BR between 1969 and 1977, was reminiscent of a classic vent van but with an extended design, serving a very similar purpose to its stout predecessors. This general-use van was designed to haul anything and everything, and it was utilized on 'Speedlink' services, which were intended to quickly transport general freight around the country. After the 'Speedlink' service was discontinued, the wagons were rapidly withdrawn, with 436 vans in service at the end of 1990, but only 97 remaining on BR books by August 1994. By 2008, only two VDA vans remained.
